The State of Arizona | The Grand Canyon State, Arizona, was the 48th state to join the U.S. in 1912, the last of 48 contiguous states to join the Union. The state's name comes from arizonac, from two Papago Indian words meaning "place of the young spring." Arizona has a very dry climate and is known for its cactus plants, and the state flower is the saguaro cactus blossom.
In 2003 Arizona was estimated to have 5,580,811 persons. From the 2000 Census, Arizona covered 113,635 square miles, with an average of 45.2 persons per square mile. 25.3% of the population is of Hispanic or Latino origin, while only 5.0% are American Indian and Alaska Native persons. Arizona's population grew between 1990 and 2000 by 40.0%.
