The Census Bureau estimates for 2007 placed Burbank's population at 107,921. Burbank is located in the east portion of the San Fernando Valley, 12 miles or 19 km north of Downtown Los Angeles.

Two major film/animation studios are headquartered in Burbank. The Walt Disney Studios serve as the international headquarters for The Walt Disney Company. Burbank Disney Studio buildings are the only studios to survive from the Golden Age of filming. Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc. (also known as Warner Bros. Pictures, or simply Warner Bros. Warner Brothers is one of the world's largest producers of film and television entertainment. It is a subsidiary of Time Warner.

The City of Burbank was named after David Burbank, a New Hampshire-born dentist, an is also known as the Media Capital of the World.
