pre 1800's - The Serranos and the Cahuilla Indians have lived in the area for thousands of years.
1810 - Father Dumetz names San Bernardino May 20, 1810, on St. Bernardino of Siena's feast day.
1819 to 1821 - Missionaries established a rancho, and later, an Asistencia Mission.
1833 to about 1848 - Between Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Los Angeles, caravans from New Mexico regularly tradedbringing woolen goods, blankets, serapes, etc., to California and returning with horses and mules from San Bernardino and silks from the Orient.
1842 - The Lugo family was granted the Rancho San Bernardino, a holding of 37,700 acres encompassing the entire San Bernardino Valley.
1851 - The Mormons bought Rancho San Bernardino from the Lugos, and a Mormon colony was founded.
1852 - Colonel Henry Washington erects survey monument in the San Bernardino Mountains.
1854 - San Bernardino incorporated, population 1200, including 900 Mormans.
1857 - Brigham Young recalls Mormons back to Utah, over 500 leave, San Bernardino disincorporated.
1860 - William F. Holcomb filed five gold claims in an area now known as Holcomb Valley.
1883 - California Southern Railroad completed from San Diego to San Bernardino.
1883 - Southern Pacific Railroad completed to neighboring Colton.
1885 - Santa Fe Railroad completed from the east to San Bernardino and Los Angeles.
1886 - San Bernardino reincorporated.
1926 - San Bernardino Valley College built.
1940 - Dick and Maurice McDonald found the first McDonalds', a barbecue drive-in in San Bernardino.
1942 - Norton Air Force Base opened.
1948 - Brothers Dick and Maurice "Mac" McDonald invent restaurant "Speedee Service System".
1955 - Ray Kroc partners with Dick and Maurice McDonald in San Bernardino.
1961 - Ray Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers for $2.7 million.
1965 - California State University, San Bernardino founded.
1994 - Norton Air Force Base closed.
1995 - San Bernardino International Airport completed at the Norton AFB site.
