1852 July - San Quentin State Prison opened in Marin County, covering 432 acres, now the oldest prison in California. For more information see San Quentin State Prison
1853 Levi Strauss came from New York at the age of twenty-four. He came to San Francisco to open a branch of his brothers' New York dry goods business. He had spent a number of years learning the trade in New York after emigrating there from his native Germany. He built his business into a very successful operation over the next twenty years, making a name for himself not only as a well-respected businessman, but as a local philanthropist as well.
1906 April 18 - San Francisco was the city receiving most of the damage from this earthquake, the resulting fire destroyed most of the city.
1933 Before the Golden Gate Bridge 1933 Map of the Bay Area
1972 September 11 - BART carries the first passengers from Fremont to Oakland.
2007 November 7 - The container ship MV Cosco Busan, a 902-foot container ship owned by China COSCO Holdings Co Ltd and leased to South Korea's Hanjin Group, hit the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge tower bumper around the western suspension span. The hit resulted in a 212-foot-long, 12-foot-wide gash in ship's side, releasing an estimated 58,000 gallons of heavy-duty bunker oil. Bunker oil is lighter than crude oil but heavier than gasoline. The ship had departed Oakland headed for South Korea in dense fog. The bridge received no structural damage according to the California DOT. By November 8, at least eight beaches in San Francisco and Marin County were closed. Over the following week, wildlife rescue workers and volunteers found hundreds of dead and injured seabirds coated with black oil in the area. KTVU News (By Jesse Gary)
