Santa Barbara is on an east-west coastline facing south, the only such section on the west coast, between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, and sometimes is referred to as the "American Riviera."
According to the United States Census Bureau in 2000 and the 2006 estimate, Santa Barbara has a total land area of 18.0 square miles and 22.4 square miles of water. The higher figure for water is due to the city limit extending into the ocean, including a strip of Santa Barbara reaching out into the sea and inland again, keeping the Santa Barbara Airport within the contiguous city boundary.
