Stockton got its start when German immigrant Captain Charles Maria Weber tried his hand at gold mining in late 1848, but he soon discovered that serving the gold-seekers needs was a more profitable opportunity. Stockton had a population of 279,513 people in the 2005 census estimate. Covering an area of 55 square miles, that would be an average density of 5,082 persons per square mile. 32.5% of the population is of Hispanic or Latino origin, and about 20% is of Asian origin. Stockton's population grew at the rate of 15.3% between 1990 and 2000.

Stockton was incorporated on July 23, 1850,
Stockton was known by several names, including "Tuleburg", "Gas City," and "Mudville". Captain Weber decided on Stockton in honor of Commodore Robert Field Stockton (20 August 1795 to 7 October 1866), Robert F. Stockton was the Military Governor of California from 1846-1847.
