City of Little Rock Arkansas | Little Rock is the largest city in Arkansas and the Arkansas Capital. Little Rock is the Pulaski County seat. In the 1700's, the Quapaw Indians resided around the current Little Rock. In 1722 - French explorer Bernard de la Harpe, looking for precious metals while traveling down the Arkansas River, landed on the south bank of the Arkansas River, near a small rock formation, which he named La Petite Roche (the little rock). La Harpe built a trading post near the little rock.
By 1821, Little Rock became the capital of the Arkansas Territory formed in 1819.
In 1836, Arkansas became the 25th state. |

State of Arkansas Information State of Arkansas Entertainment Arkansas Business Information | Nicknamed the "Land of Opportunity," Arkansas, which joined the Union in 1836, was the 25th state. The early French explorers of the state gave it its name, which is probably a phonetic spelling for the French word for "downriver" people, a reference to the Quapaw Indians and the river along which they settled. Arkansas is the only state in which diamonds have been mined, although today the mine operates only as a tourist attraction. The state flower is the apple blossom.
According to the Census Bureau, Arkansas had an estimated 2,725,714 people in 2003, and covered 52,068 square miles with a density of 51.3 persons per square mile. The highest elevation is Magazine Mountain at 2753 feet, and the lowest elevation is the Ouachita River at 54 feet.
