Economic Overview from the CIA: Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822 and a republic in 1889. By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution remains a pressing problem.

Fordlândia Brazil | You may be surprised to hear of a place on the Tapajos River in the Amazon rainforest named Fordlandia.
The degree which a firm owns its upstream suppliers is referred to as vertical integration. American automobile tycoon Henry Ford built this town in Brazil to increase his Vertical Integration as much as possible in America. Ford owned iron & coal mines, steel mills, forests (many body frame members were made of wood in those days, as well as wheels), lumber mills, the ship and rail transportation systems to deliver these resources, and even small hydroelectric plants. He didn't own the rubber resources for the tires and other rubber parts. He hoped to secure rubber from Brazil.
In 2005 the town was still abandoned and in ruins.
