Florida

Covering 53,927 square miles, and called the "Sunshine State," Florida is known for its balmy, sunny weather and beautiful beaches. Ponce de Leon, in search of the elusive fountain of youth, was the first European to explore Florida. St. Augustine, founded by the Spanish in 1565, is the oldest permanent European settlement in the continental United States. Florida became the twenty-seventh state in the United States on March 3, 1845. Florida's state flower is the orange blossom, which is particularly fitting because oranges are a main export of the state. Because of its shape and location, a long peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, Florida attracts millions of visitors each year to its many seaside resort areas. The largest city is Jacksonville, the capital is Tallahassee.

17,019,068 people lived in Florida according to the estimate given by the Census bureau for 2003. Florida enjoyed a 23% growth rate between 1990 and 2000. The Florida year 2000 information was: density of 296.4 persons per square mile, 16.8% of the population was of Hispanic or Latino origin, and 14.6% was of Black or African American origin.
