The State of Georgia, the Peach State, was founded in 1733 and is one of the original 13 states. It was named in honor of England's King George II. During the Civil War, the fall of Atlanta was a crucial turning point in the defeat of the South.

Atlanta, Georgia's capital since 1868, is a thriving city with major national corporations, and is considered the economic and cultural center of the Southeast. The state flower is the Cherokee rose.

From the Census Bureau: Georgia's year 2003 population was estimated at 8,684,715 persons. Covering an area of 57,906 square miles the density in the year 2000 was 141.4 persons per square mile. Georgia grew at the rate of 26.4% between 1990 and 2000. 28.7% of the population was of Black or African American origin, and 5.3% was of Hispanic or Latino origin. The largest cities in order of size are Altanta, Augusta, Columbus, Savannah, Athens and Macon.

Alpharetta Georgia

The City of Alpharetta and historical Milton County (named for John Milton, Georgia's first secretary of state, who was elected three times, now Fulton County) can trace their history to the time of the resettlement of the Cherokee Indian Nation in the 1830's. Drawn by the promise of free Indian lands, a few setters moved into the area and were soon followed by permanent farmers and merchants who were the fortunate winners of the land lotteries of the early 1830's.

December 11, 1858, was the date Alpharetta was legally chartered. Prior to July of that year, the town was known as the "Town of Milton". The first report of the City Trustees showed a balance of $1,302.00 for fiscal year 1859.

In the 1930's it was decided a merger of Milton County and Fulton County would be to everyone's advantage, this resulted in an enlarged Fulton County. This merger also resulted in the first roads being paved. Until that time, the only paved roads in the area were State Highway 19 (now Highway 9) and 120 (now Old Milton Parkway).
