The 2003 population estimate for Hawaii according to the Census Bureau was 1,257,608 persons. In 2000, the population was 41.6% Asian, 24% White, 9.4% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders, 7.2% of Hispanic or Latino origin. There were an average of 188.6 persons per square mile. The state is comprised of nineteen major islands and atolls in the Central Pacific Ocean. The state government, with its official count of 137 islands, includes all of the minor offshore islands and individual islets found in each atoll. The inhabited islands are seven of the southernmost lying between Ni'ihau and the Big Island of Hawai'i, but the island chain extends about 1000 miles to the northwest. According to the Census Bureau, the total land area is 6,423 square miles, or a little smaller than the State of New Jersey.
