State of Illinois | Illinois was named for the Illinois Indians. The state is known as the "Land of Lincoln," because it's where the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, was raised. Illinois became the 21st state in 1818 and Springfield is the Capitol. With a population near 13 million people, Illinois covers 55,584 square miles, making it larger in area than the State of Florida. Chicago is Illinois' largest city, and the nation's third largest city, it is located at the north eastern edge of the state on Lake Michigan. The state flower is the native violet, and the state flag is on the left.
The population of Illinois grew 8.6 percent between 1990 and 2000. According to Census 2000, 15.1% were of Black or African American origin, 12.3% were of Hispanic or Latino origin and 3.4% were of Asian origin. 51% of the total population was female. There were an average of 223.4 persons per square mile. | The State of Illinois
