 City of Detroit Michigan
| Detroit is a city of rhythm, from the resonance of automated assembly, to the sounds generated by passionate artists and musicians. Detroit gave the world music genres like Motown and techno, and exported world-class musicians to other genres like jazz, blues, gospel, rock and hip-hop. Detroit is the city that not only built cars and companies, but the sounds that revolutionized the world.
Combining the words motor and town, Detroiter Berry Gordy coined the word Motown in 1960 to name his record company that put Detroit's music scene on the map. Gordy signed young Detroit talent and turned out hit after hit, featuring artists like Stevie Wonder, Four Tops, Supremes, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. Gordy ran his company like a well-oiled machine, much like the assembly line he worked on at Ford Motor Company.
Now, Motown is synonymous with Detroit and the artists who contributed their original sounds to the world.
Detroit Nicknames include The Motor City, Motown, Hockeytown, Rock City, The D. |
