South of Dallas and Austin, and West of Houston is one of the largest cities in the United States, San Antonio. The City is a commercial, manufacturing, military, tourist, and financial center situated in a crop, cattle and sheep raising area. Manufacturing includes chemicals, processed food, building materials, aerospace equipment, clothing, and machinery. Five military installations in or near the city are important to its economy. They are Fort Sam Houston, headquarters of the United States Fifth Army and site of Brooke Army Medical Center; Randolph Air Force Base, the Air Force Records Center; Kelly Air Force Base, a center for repairing aircraft; Brooks Air Force Base, home to the U.S. Aerospace Medical Center; and Lackland Air Force Base. San Antonio is served by several railroads, three interstate highways (I-10, I-35 and I-37), and an international airport (SAT).
San Antonio is the most visited area in texas, mainley because of The Alamo, 300 Alamo Plaza on the east side of Alamo Plaza is the most famous spot in Texas where all 189 defenders fell on March 6, 1836, after repeated attacks by Mexican General Santa Anna's army. Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) was established in 1718 as the city's first mission. The chapel, one of the most photographed facades in the nation, and the Long Barracks are all that remain of the original fort. |

City of San Antonio | The County is pronounced "bear", San Antonio is the Bexar County Seat. The county gets its name from Duke of Béxar, second son of King Phillip V of Spain. The Mission San Antonio de Valero and its presidio were established in 1718 on the San Antonio River. The villa that grew up beside them was called the Villa de San Antonio de Béxar until 1831, when a church was built for the residents of the town. The church was named San Fernando de Béxar and the town's name was changed to Villa San Fernando de Béxar. Bexar County was created on December 20, 1836. |
