In 1853, the Washington Territory was formed from part of the Oregon Territory. Named in honor of George Washington, Washington was the 42nd state to join the Union, in 1889. Its coastal location and Puget Sound harbors give it a leading role in trade with Alaska, Canada, and the Pacific Rim. The state has two major mountain ranges--the 7,000-foot Olympic Mountains surrounded by temperate rain forest on the peninsula west of Puget Sound, and the more majestic Cascade Range, which boasts the 14,410-foot Mount Rainier and the volcanic Mount St. Helens, which erupted twice in the 1980s. The state tree of the "Evergreen State" is the western hemlock, and the flower is the western rhododendron. The population according to the Cnsus Bureau, 2003 estimated was 6,131,445 persons. The largest city is Seattle, the Capitol is Olympia.

May 3 - Harry Lillis Crosby was born in a house his father built at 1112 North J Street. Later as Bing Crosby, he was very successful across record sales, radio ratings and motion picture grosses. Bing Crosby and his musical acts influenced male singers of the era that followed him, including Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, and Dean Martin. Yank magazine recognized Crosby as the person who had done the most for American G.I. morale during World War II and, around 1948, polls declared him the most admired man alive.
